information and resource services to Minnesota landlords and Minnesota tenants. Information includes
a 256-page property management reference manual, a landlord apartment rental kit
and a tenant apartment information and move-in package.

tenants everywhere in Minnesota. The Attorney Generals
Handbook attempts to explain those rights.

This booklet should

landlord-tenant problems or questions. It is a summary of the
laws that govern the landlord-tenant relationship. Statutes
and some case law examples are cited in the back of the

Minnesota Security
Deposits
|
|
Landlords have the right
to require tenants to pay a security deposit (sometimes called a
"damage deposit").
This is money paid by the tenant and held by the landlord to pay for any
damage, beyond ordinary wear and tear, the tenant might do to the rental
unit. It can be used to pay for any unpaid rent, or any money the tenant
owes to the landlord under the lease or another agreement.
The
security deposit cannot be used by the tenant to pay the rent.
